Things to See and Do

Virtually anyone can find something enjoyable to see or do in this remarkable area and below are some of the region’s most popular landmarks and attractions.

Tareq Rajab Museum

Housed in the lower level of a large villa, this splendid ethnographic museum deserves a spot on every holidaymaker’s must-see list. The Museum boasts inlaid musical instruments suspended in glass cabinets, Saudi gold and Omani silver jewellery, headdresses from the Mongol helmet to the humble prayer cap, and adornments worn by ancient princesses. However, in spite of these magnificent pieces, the Museum’s international importance stems from its collection of Arabic manuscripts, found in its Calligraphy Gallery.

Mirror House

For a one-of-a-kind experience with art, visitors should consider a trip to the Mirror House, which is a residential home entirely covered with Mosaic mirrors. It is the glorious creation of eccentric Kuwaiti-Italian artist, Lidia Al Qattan, who offers stories and explanations for each room during a guided tour. The house, which was 40 years in the making, was completed in 2006 and features 70 tonnes of mirror. Definitely a sight worth seeing, the Mirror House is a favourite among visitors and locals alike.

Scuba Diving and Snorkelling

Adventurous souls may wish to schedule a boat trip to the Islands of Umm al-Maradim, Qaruh, and Qit'at for a morning or afternoon of snorkelling and scuba diving. Such excursions can be easily booked from Kuwait, and all the aforementioned islands offer rental equipment and have dive schools on the premises.

The Scientific Centre

Those searching for fun and interesting activities should reserve a day for a visit to the city's world renowned Scientific Centre. For a small fee, families can spend the day in this compelling centre, which includes a museum, IMAX theatre, aquarium, and food court.

Grand Mosque of Kuwait

No trip to Kuwait is complete without a visit to the Grand Mosque. Although mosques abound in Kuwait, the Grand Mosque is regarded as an outstanding city landmark. The large, dramatic mosque boasts two spacious prayer halls and a generous size Islamic library. The official Mosque of Kuwait, this structure also features ornate Islamic architecture and lavish interior.

Shopping and Dining

Once the centre of trade, Kuwait City's Souq Mubarakiya has kept its sprawling, bustling glory. The market’s historical centre is home to contemporary buildings, boutiques, and outdoor markets of all kinds. Wandering through this wonderful shopping area offers visitors an unparalleled sensory experience, with the aroma of rich spices and the panoramic view of endless, colourful stalls.

Kuwait’s largest shopping mall and the second largest marketplace in the Middle East, The Avenues offers world-class shopping opportunities as well. Its lengthy, palm tree-lined paths are designed to look like European streets, with storefront architecture similar to that seen in London or Venice. Virtually anything a shopper is searching for can be found at The Avenues.

Dining is also an enjoyable experience in Kuwait, as the region is regarded by many as a culinary haven and is home to an essentially unlimited number of restaurant choices. Some popular establishments in the centre of town include Le Nôtre, which features a diverse menu and a great view of the Kuwait Towers. Other favourites include the Al Boom, an impressive seafood restaurant set on the massive Mohammedi II dhow, and Burj Al Hamam, a waterfront establishment offering seafood, steak and classic Middle Eastern fare.

Best Time to Visit

Because Kuwait features a subtropical desert climate, summers are very hot. October and November are some of the best months to visit Kuwait, as temperatures hover around 30 degrees Celsius. June through mid-September visitors can expect the climate to be extremely hot and dry, with temperatures reaching approximately 45 degrees Celsius. December through March make up the winter season, during which the average temperature is 19 degrees Celsius. Fortunately, abundant sunshine can be expected throughout most of the year, although intense showers do occur from time to time. However, regardless of when one chooses to travel, excitement and adventure await those who visit this engaging city.
